Dr. Jeff Albright Sensei began his Aikido studies in 1992 under Akira Tohei Shihan, who was the senior ranking aikidoka in the United States until his passing in 1999. Upon graduation from the University of Minnesota, where Albright Sensei studied Japanese language and East Asian Studies, he moved to Japan to further his training. He became the senior student, assistant instructor, and member of the board for not only one but two aikido dojos in Nagasaki, Kiwakai Nagasaki Shibu and Nagasaki Aikidokai.
Nagasaki Aikidokai led by Shishijima sensei, in Omura and Seiyama sensei in Nagasaki city, recognized Albright Sensei's ability and prowess, for which he was quickly promoted by Nakamura Takuya Shihan. He was also exposed to several other shihan's instruction including Ikeda sensei, Hiroshima Shibu, and the current International Aikido Federation Secretary Peter Goldsberry. He was awarded for diligent practice and effort attending two of their branch dojos regularly. Albright Sensei assisted in everyday dojo management, instructing of classes including to Japanese Self Defense Forces Officers and Personnel. He promoted the dojo and was recognized in both the local newspaper and radio. He also gave a special demonstration to the Kanoya branch dojo for mainly military personnel.
Through Nagasaki Kiwakai Albright Sensei was introduced to many shihan in the Kansai area, particularly Wakayama Prefecture the birthplace of the founder of aikido, Ueshiba Morihei. Iio Morihei Shihan began volunteering at a local police station teaching children, with the assistance of Albright Sensei the club grew and gained an international flavor. The dojo grew with members from Tunisia, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Jordan. The dojo eventually relocated to it's current home, Suwa Jinja Dojo. Iio Sensei introduced Jeff to the teachings of Saotome shihan who was the Shihan for Wakayama University when Iio Sensei was captain of the University Aikido Club. By attending various Gasshuku with Wakayama University's Aikido Club, Jeff met and trained with Sasaki, Masando Shihan, Kumagai, Kenji Shihan, Suma Shihan,
Shiragami Shihan, Nishimori Shihan, and Kinoshita Shihan.
Albright Sensei met Miho and introduced her to the martial arts. They were married and upon completing his 3 year contract with the Nagasaki City Board of Education they returned to the United States. Albright Sensei continued teaching, while preparing to follow his childhood dream to study natural healing methods including chiropractic and acupuncture. While attending Logan College of Chiropractic, he taught at multiple dojos in the St. Louis area.
Upon Graduation from Chiropractic College, Albright Sensei returned to Japan to continue his aikido training and his study of Japanese Acupuncture. He returned to train with Sasaki Masando Shihan, to whom he found a special connection seven years before. He knew that one day he would train directly under him at Shinmei Juku. Sasaki Sensei profoundly affected his training, mindset and life. He received his 3rd dan from Sasaki Sensei after being sent to Ichikukai Shogaku Misogi training and training at Aikikai Hombu Dojo. When Sasaki Sensei learned that Albright Sensei was to return to Denver, Colorado to take a job, he urged him to train under the auspices of Kei Izawa of Tanshinjuku, a long time student of Kanai Sensei.
Albright Sensei currently holds the rank of 3rd Dan in Aikido. He counts Akira Tohei, Iio Morihei, Shishijima, Kumagai Kenji, Suma, Hiroshi, Shiragami, Jyunichi, Endo, Seishiro, Saotome Mitsugi , Ikeda, Hiroshi, George Ledyard, and Steven Seagal as influences on his Aikido. He found his shisho or Master in Sasaki Masando Shihan, and continues to grow and develop himself through personal training in Aikido.
